Plastic Matter
draws inspiration from compressed waste bales and consists of hollow, differently coloured cubes made from everyday plastic waste collected across Malmö.

The plastic has been sorted by type, processed, and ultimately melted around a mould. The cubes are made exclusively from non-toxic HDPE and LDPE. By keeping the material homogeneous, the cubes can easily be recycled once they have served their purpose.

By illuminating the cubes, we sought to make visible the volume of plastic waste generated around Malmö every day, while also exploring the aesthetic potential of a material that is normally considered ugly. What is usually concealed, sorted out, and removed from sight instead becomes monumental and present.

Plastic Matter was originally developed for the exhibition format Landfill Pavilion at Malmö Garden Show, where the cubes were arranged within a wooden structure that visitors could enter and interact with.
